02/10/25 ICU-New Grad Support

Today I think I did a good job supporting the new grad nurse.

I introduced myself and asked about her transition phases, and I keep myself approachable throughout the whole shift so she is more willing to ask me for help.

The patient has a severe respiratory failure and has just been extubated yesterday onto NIV.

Today the Dr wants to try her on HFNP, so I help the nurse to set up HFNP and discuss with her the potential sign of failing the HFNP trial, and what we should do about it.

We monitored the ABG pretty closely and able to notice the pCO2 is trending up a bit. So I asked her if she's happy to notify the Dr, this way she can learn to be independent to communicate with the medical team, and I can be of assistance if needed.

Overall we were able to prevent patient to deteriorate and help the grad nurse to learn more about respiratory failure/NIV.

I'm happy and it has been a good day.
